Installing and Setting up Oracle Express Edition (database) and SQL Developer (client) on Windows for Development

Oracle Database Express Edition is the free version of Oracle relational database. We will quickly see how we can download, install and set it up.

DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING ORACLE XPRESS EDITION (FREE)

    1. Download Oracle Xpress Edition (free)
    2. Install Oracle Xpress Edition (free)
      • Unzip and install from the setup.exe file.

DOWNLOADING, INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING SQL DEVELOPER

    1. Download and install SqlDeveloper (free) as above.
      1. You might get the link from the same download page, or do a simple google search to reach there.
    2. Start database from start menu under Oracle 11g database express edition or from windows services (if not already started).
    3. Configure a connection and user in SQL Developer.
      1. Create a connection for system user in the SqlDeveloper with the password specified during the install.
      2. Then create a regular user as:
        • create user username identified by password; where username is the new username and password is the password for the new user.
      3. Grant permission for the user to create sessions, create table and space resources on the table space.
        • grant create session, create table, unlimited tablespace to username
          • CREATE SESSION allows the user to connect to the database and other two permissions are needed to create a table.
          • Granting UNLIMITED_TABLESPACE or RESOURCE to a user enables him to create tables of ANY size on ANY tablespace( including SYSTEM) and hence is undesirable.
          • Allocating quota on specific tablespaces is the more appropriate way to control quota allocation.

CREATING SAMPLE TABLE AND INSERTING DATA

Create table employee(empName varchar(20), id int PRIMARY KEY)

    insert into employee values (‘name1’,1)

    insert into employee values (‘name2’,2)

FINDING REQUIRED JAR FILES FOR PROGRAMMING CLIENTS USING JAVA

You can search for Oracle Database 11g Release 2 JDBC Drivers in google. The current download link is: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/jdbc-112010-090769.html

Usually the downloaded jdbc driver jars (ojdbc6.jar) are added into classpath. You can do this in eclipse IDE using ‘Add External Jars’ under ‘Configure Java Build Path’.
